Saturday Autocross Preview

Robert at the ZMax parking lot, Ford version

Not too far outside of Charlotte NC is one of the coolest places in the world, IKEA Furniture! Yeah, they have great Swedish Meatballs and cheap hot dogs, plus all that furniture stuff...but hey, this is an automotive blog, so enough about food! What's REALLY great about Charlotte is all the wonderful BBQ places! Whoops, sorry, back to cars!
Brian at the ZMax parking lot, Jaguar version

Northeast of Charlotte is not only Charlotte Motor Speedway's giant NASCAR track, but also a dirt oval, and a 4-wide drag strip! Better than all that, however, is the huge parking lot next to the drag strip, because that's where NMS will be on Saturday. This is the home turf of the Central Carolina Region of the Sports Car Club of America, so we'll be competing with 140+ other drivers to see who gets around the course of traffic cones the fastest. A lot of autocross regions use smaller parking lots and run maybe a course only lasting 35 seconds or so, but at ZMax Dragway we'll likely be driving each run for well over a minute, so that sounds like more driving to me, and more driving equals more fun!

So far there are 165 drivers entered for this one event. I'll predict we beat at least half of them! You can find the current list of drivers and cars entered at this link:  Saturday Entries

There are a lot of different classes for various levels of modified cars, so in our class it looks like the NMS BMW will be up against a NIssan 350Z, a Chevrolet Corvette, and a Porsche Boxster S. Hmmm, that sounds like a bunch of cars that are a bunch faster than my FIAT Abarth, and again, faster equals more fun!
After fighting it out in Charlotte, we'll take on a smaller parking lot at Darlington SC on Sunday, more competition, different drivers, same amount of fun!

Stay tuned for our report next week (with video) on who wins this NMS Carolina Showdown, and keep in mind that it would be rude of me to go faster than Brian in his own car. Or the sun will be in my eyes. Or I'll be driving under the influence of too much Carolina BBQ.

NMS Announces Double-Header of March Madness

Together Again, First Time in 2019, Carolina Catastrophe!

From their world wide headquarters, AKA "Evil Lair", the NMS team announced today that both drivers would soon be spotted during an autocross double-header in March. First appearing on Saturday March 2nd at ZMax Dragway in Charlotte NC, the drivers will attempt to take turns driving the NMS BMW 335is with the Central Carolina Region of the Sports Car Club of America. Following that guaranteed disaster, the hapless drivers will try it again at Darlington Speedway in South Carolina on Sunday March 3rd in another autocross event, this time with the South Carolina Region. The only good news we can make out of this doubleheader of doubly dumb driving doofus-ness is that at least there isn't a third state named Carolina or these guys would likely try to drive there too.
Autocross Time Again

With both drivers in the same car, if nothing else, we should be entertained to see which is the fastest in a rear wheel drive car that is painted red and built in Germany. While the early money in Vegas says that car owner Brian Nixon is likely to be faster, this writer believes you'd have more fun in Vegas betting on blackjack rather than two slowpokes trying to get around some cones on an autocross course.

More Lemons For 2019

For the past two years, the NMS team has participated in some of the 24 Hours of Lemons races, and had a blast doing it. Now, we could go out on a limb, stretch the truth, and tell you how we're PROFESSIONAL Lemons drivers, since Brian and Team Coronautski actually won some prize money at their last event, but...to be honest, the amount of prize money did not cover the cost of the car. Or the cost of entering the race. Or the amount of tires, gas, and brakes that they spent that weekend. But, they did win their class, so that's pretty awesome!

The Lemons folks have races all across the country, and even in some other countries! Brian and Team Coronautski have announced they will enter the true 24 Hour Race at CMP in April, and this time their not running the 70s Dodge Coronet! Nope! They've found a new to them 1990 Miata that even as we speak is having a roll cage installed, and it will be ready to go on track at the end of April.

Here's a list below of all the Lemons races scheduled for this year. We recommend you get out there and watch one, or better yet, find some friends and a 500 dollar car and enter! You can find more on their website, 24 HOURS OF LEMONS.  You can always follow Team Coronautski on their FaceBook page too.

What is NASA Launching This Year?

NASA Northeast at Pocono Last Year

The ol' Mars Rover was in the news this week, and right about now I bet you're wondering what NASA is doing next. Well, those crazy guys at NASA are going to launch...a bunch of DRIVING next year! Ha ha ha, we're not talking about the space guys and gals, but the National Auto Sports Association! I'm sure that doesn't cause much confusion, but seriously, the NASA group has regions that cover the country, and the team at NMS has found all of their events to be well run, tons of fun, and a bit more reasonably priced than some other ways to drive your car on track.

NMS-North is up here in the NASA Northeast Region, while NMS-South hangs out in the NASA-Southeast Region. In between us is the NASA Mid Atlantic Region too, so there are driving events all over the map in 2019.

One great thing about NASA is that most regions have sales on their driving events this time of year, so if you're looking to get on track next year and want to save some money, we suggest you check them out now and see if there are some good deals that might save you some money too.

We're just a few days away from seeing some of this year's F1 competitors, so get your F1 flags ready to fly! From what we know reading on line, the US based Haas team will kick it off this Thursday, so we'll get a first look at the car this week! If you're looking for more pre-season excitement, the McLaren and Ferrari teams have video of their new engines being fired up in their workshops, just Google it man!

The fine friendly Formula one folks have released their schedule of races for 2019! For those of us here in the USA, we have the race in Austin which has usually been in October now showing up in November. The next closest race in Montreal remains early in June, so I hope you're out of school by then for the race on June 9th. Also close, Mexico City's date will come up on October 27th.

For anyone wanting first hand reporting, photos, and stories from these events, the NMS squad would be happy to grant your wish! All you have to do is send us the plane tickets, race tickets, and some extra spending money and we'll let you know how it turns out! We'll be happy to take photos, write stories, whatever you want!

Before the racing season kicks off down under, there will be two test sessions for all the teams. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will be the place to see F1 cars on track for the first time this year, so February can't come soon enough!

#2: Speaking of "Kick-Off", last Sunday was the Super Bowl. I don't know about you, but it didn't seem so "Super", and I totally missed any "Bowling." However, there were some car commercials, so our quick take on the car ads starts right now!
Plenty of people would probably agree with me that the best part of the Superbowl every year is the funny and creative commercial. If so, then the best part of the best part (best of the best of the best, SIR!) has to be the car commercials shown during the game. Let’s go to the tape and check out the best of them.

National Anthem, Gladys Knight: KAPOW! Good stuff! I’ve seen her Chicken and Waffles restaurants in Georgia too! I don't think Maroon 5 is going to top Gladys, even without the Pips!

1stQuarter

--Hyundai elevator ad, Jason Bateman, pretty funny, Car Shopping Shopper Assurance makes pricing and purchase easier, test drive comes to you, 3 day trial, kind of funny, not quite a killer, so let’s kickoff the grading with a B.

--Weather Tech and Pet Comfort, your basic ad, and kudos to Weather Tech for the huge amount of advertising they do for their car related products. B

--Audi E-Tron SUV, not an ad, but sponsoring part of the 1stquarter?

-- Ahh, here's the Audi ad: Grandpa, welcome home, your future awaits, the guy was choking on a nut, dreaming of the Audi Etron of the future, coming in 2022. Oddball, sort of funny, B+, still waiting for a great ad.

Audi wins the first quarter by a lot. No score in the game yet.

2ndQuarter
Guy watching tv, walking around town, just says things and they happen, gets in his Mercedes A class, starts at 32500, talks to it to change music and lighting inside. Maybe an A- since I didn’t know what it was going to be for until he got in the car.

Toni Harris gets in her hybrid RAV4 by Toyota, they said she’d never get a football scholarship, but she did. A

Planters peanuts, peanut mobile, always there in crunch time, Charlie Sheen, A-Rod, Nuts2U license plate, not really a car commercial, but about the funniest thing so far, another A, that makes two in a row for the 2ndquarter.  Mr. Peanut saves A-rod from having to eat kale chips.

Both of them got As in the second quarter, but I'm giving the win to the Planters peanuts for being funny!

Halftime--Here's a funny comment I saw on line....Maroon 5, Pats 3, Rams 0

Toyota Supra driving in a pinball machine, music courtesy of the Who “Pinball Wizard”, not bad, mostly we’re all just happy that the Supra is back! B.

Mini Countryman, guy driving through city singing Don’t Fence Me In. Missed most of this commercial, so I’m glad to see Mini advertising at all!  C

Supra wins the halftime car ad bowl.

3rdQuarter
Kia Telluride, assembled in West Point Georgia, here’s to the great unknowns, give it everything, one of those inspirational commercials, maybe I’m not a fan of serious car ads, C. To Kia's credit, it was a big long 90 second ad, and they sure sell a lot of cars.

Only 1 car ad in the 3rd? OK, Kia wins with a grade of C.

Rams kick field goal, tied 3-3

4thQuarter  still 3-3

According to one website that listed ads, there won’t be any more car ads in this superbowl. Hmmm, not even one ad for a pickup truck? I thought this was America!

Weather Tech cup holder phone holder thingy, Hey, there was another car RELATED ad, only a 15 second one, but now I want to buy one of these things for all my cars. A

Pats win the lowest scoring Super Bowl of all time:  13-3

#3: In the Formula 1 world, the new season pretty much started this week, not with any cars being driven, not with any new driver announcements, but with the first team to unveil their 2019 cars. The Haas F1 team took the wraps off their all new black and gold car, courtesy of new team sponsor Rich Energy drinks. After being in Haas colors of red and gray for their first three years, I think this mostly black with a bit of gold is very sharp looking. The other nine teams will reveal their cars next week, and then on February 18th all the cars will be testing, on track, for the first time this year. Luckily for those of us in the USA, that's the President's Day holiday, so we'll have some race cars running to make it a great day!

NMS-North Takes Major Prize!

If you've seen the movie A Christmas Story, you know that the father won a "MAJOR PRIZE" which turned out to be a very cheesy lamp of a woman's leg in black stockings, so, not really a major prize. But here at NMS-North, while we didn't win the Powerball or Mega Millions (but are willing to accept!), we received a little wheel hanger tool from our friends at Ricambi America. Here's what arrived in the mail yesterday:

Jaguar F-Type

Sorry, a shiny new red Jaguar F-Type DID NOT come in the mail yesterday, we just saw it at the local mall! But, if you are looking for a cool looking car, you can get one for right around six figures, at least that's what we saw on the window sticker!

$99,863.00

In the real mail, here's what followed me home:

F1 magazine with 5 time champ Lewis Hamilton on the cover, and a box that contained the following:

Ricambi America Wheel Hanger Tool
The other day the folks from Ricambi had a little contest, asking Facebook viewers to caption a photo of a classic Ferrari on their page, and NMS-North was the big winner! Now, I only need to buy a Ferrari, and then when I need to re-attach the wheels, I can insert the wheel hanger tool into the suspension and slip the wheel on, where the wheel hanger tool will keep the wheel on as I attach and secure the lug nuts.

Most people probably buy the Ferrari first, and THEN get this tool, so here's to being unconventional. Also, here's to entering contests, because you can't win if you don't enter!
