November Autocross Report: Season Wrap-Up

The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. Looks like a good setting for a tractor pull!

More cars!

After driving in all the club events so far this season (only 5), I headed up to Winston-Salem for the sixth and final 2024 autocross with the Carolinas Region of the Porsche Club of America. It was a great fall day with a high of about 66 degrees, and unlike the earlier event in WS it didn't rain! With 5 runs scheduled in the morning and 5 in the afternoon, there was plenty of driving to do on top of the trip to and from the event. As a bonus, one of my runs didn't count due to a timing glitch, so I got an extra rerun, making a total of 11 attempts at the same course.

Great weather!

Then on the way home, just like two weeks ago, I had plenty of Carolina Panthers and NASCAR racing on the radio. Shoot, the Panthers actually beat the Saints and have matched their win total from last year already! Yep, a big ol' whopping two wins this year. So far!

SPOILER ALERT!

Like the last event I experimented with a few different tire pressures, and managed my fastest time with lower tire pressures, just below the owner's manual recommendations. The other variable I tried was turning off the traction control for the afternoon. With a good base line of driving about 48.6 seconds in the morning, I dropped over a second in the afternoon and hit a 47.4. That was fun and the lack of stability management helped rotate the car more, so I plan to do that all the time in the future. Oh, and that time gave me the 6th fastest on the day out of 28 drivers, and 4th fastest Porsche. I could point out that a few of the faster drivers might have had about 200 more horsepower than my car, but not all of them did!

Here's a look at the course, a big figure eight. My driving app says that on the 2nd crossover I hit 62 mph, so that felt pretty darn quick out there on course.
